The Road to Rocroi is a monograph on the Spanish Army of Flanders, that complements Geoffrey Parker’s The Army of Flander and the Spanish Road. While Geoffrey Parker emphasized the finances and logistics of the Army of Flanders, González de León also emphasizes the role of policies and changes in leadership ordered from Madrid. He shows how Spain dominated Europe following the School of Alba, started by the 3rd Duke of Alba, how soldiers were forced to abuse the local population when they weren’t paid, and the author describes how the quality of the leadership decayed and how attempts to reform failed. It’s a scholarly book, but indispensable to understand the decline of the Hispanic monarchy as the greatest military power of Europe.
