Robert Goodwin offers an unusual study about the Spanish Empire. He explains the political history of the period that is covered, but more interestingly he dedicates much time to the Spanish Golden Age in arts and literature, the key actors of the Spanish hegemony, the development of political institutions, foreign policy, and the legacy of Spain as the world’s first global power (or second if we count the Mongols). The only criticism could be that there’s little discussion in Spain: The Center of the World 1519-1682 on why this or that event happened.
